Checking in as expectations change
Review the pace of a connection and respect changing preferences without blame or pressure.
Invite an honest answer
Ask how the pace, communication and time together feel to each adult. Choose a calm moment rather than requiring an immediate answer during a disagreement. Different feelings do not mean somebody has failed the relationship. Listen before proposing a solution, and allow a person to say that they need time or are no longer interested.
Discuss changes openly
Availability, preferences and existing relationships can change. Explain new circumstances instead of expecting others to infer them from fewer messages or cancelled plans. Avoid using jealousy, exclusion or withdrawal to obtain agreement. Each adult should be able to maintain independent friendships and decisions. If the current arrangement no longer works for someone, discuss whether a respectful change or ending is appropriate.
End a connection with care
Be clear and considerate if you do not want to continue. Respect requests for no further contact, and do not share private messages or photographs afterward. You can appreciate an experience without promising a future relationship. If a conversation becomes coercive or threatening, prioritise your own safety and use the support or reporting options appropriate to the situation.
