Planning a first public meeting

Meet as adults in a comfortable public place, with clear plans and independent options for leaving.

Decide the venue together

Choose an established café, restaurant or another public place with staff and other visitors. Agree on the time, who will attend and approximately how long you expect to stay. Do not surprise someone with an additional guest. Consider access needs, travel distance and the cost of the venue so that agreeing to meet does not create unnecessary pressure for anyone.

Keep independent practical options

Arrange transport you can control, keep your phone available and let someone you trust know your plans. You do not need to give a home address to simplify a journey. Discuss how the bill will be handled before it becomes awkward. Paying for a meal, buying a gift or travelling further never creates an obligation for another person to continue the evening.

Keep the first plan limited

Meeting in person is an opportunity to see how conversation feels, not a commitment to another venue or future involvement. Any person can decline a change, finish early or decide against another meeting. Afterward, give everyone space to reflect before asking for a decision. Notice whether you felt included and listened to, rather than judging the meeting only by its atmosphere.
